St. Annes EX servicemen 30/11/2008

Venue: The fortress

A bitterly cold morning greeted us all at the entrance to Squires Gate and with Jack Frost as the weekends grounds keeper the game was looking like a write off. Fortunately we had mighty Colin, our referee, to make the call. He's old school, like the old school and of course the game was on.

The changing room soon filled up with people and the decibels raised to a new Excelsior record as Greeny and Scholes started pecking at each other moments before the Gaffers inspirational and moving words, "We should be killing teams like this", "Its up to you guys on the pitch" and "How much do you want it?" enough said.

Today's Spartans were – Hunty in the sticks, new look back four of Dezzy, Greeny, Per and Neil. Middle of the park, a familiar four of Mercer, Scholes, Fiss and Lizzy. Up front, the same as always, Sean and a half cut Wozzer.

Some unhappy people voiced comments about being left out, good to hear because it shows people really want to play for us but on the other hand there is a time and a place and during the team talk was not the time or the place.

Toss up won and our visitors had to play into the sun for the first 45. St. Annes were immediately on the back foot and it was soon apparent that they only had the one decent player, the goal keeper.

Outstanding save after outstanding save was pulled off, leaving us thinking for 25 minutes that some one had put a chastity belt over the St. Annes goal. The break through eventually came from the ratty claws of Steve Mercer.

Some nice work in the middle of the park retaining possession and keeping the ball moving allowed some space for Mercer, when he received the inch perfect through ball all he was left to do was beat the Keeper that was refusing to be beat. Mercer slotted the ball past him in to the bottom corner. A nice finish capping off a great move.

The next came shortly after. Top goal scorer Craig Worrall made it 2-0 to Excelsior with a fine finish in to the roof of the net after a solo run in to the St. Annes box.

St. Annes were reduced to 45 minutes in their own half with odd ball aimlessly punted into ours they hardly made a chance on goal.

We had been knocking at the door of the St. Annes goal all morning, it could have been 10-0 at this point but for some poor finishing and a keeper having the game of his life.

Half time 2-0 us.

The outdoor team talk started as usual, the Gaffer could not believe his top of the table side were only beating bottom of the league by 2-0 goals!! No changes were made; we just knew we needed more goals to send the message to rest of the league that this Excelsior ain't for shifting.

Off we went and just like the first half St. Annes had no option but to work on the defensive side of their game as we constantly attacked looking for numbers 3 to 10.

Only one thing could happen in such a one sided game and that was more goals for Excelsior. Lizzy got himself two goals. One from a solo effort coming inside off the wing and the other from another inch perfect through pass just requiring the finish.

Wozzer got his second, making up for an earlier miss. Another great through ball allowed Sean to run clear from his marker to the 6 yard line, he squared to Woz and Woz tapped in the killer blow. Great unselfish work from Sean.

The subs were rolled out, George for Dez and Mercer made way for Nico. Both got straight in to the game as if they had started.

All in all a comprehensive win. A poor side with only one thing going for them which is as said before their keeper. A good game to come back to after 3 weeks off, to be honest I find the opposition at training a million times better than today's lot but I suppose that should go without saying. A game we were expected to win.

Ratings
Huntelaar – 7 – Had one save to make and made it well. Great kicking again.
Dezzy – 6 – Little to do. A few signs of rust but a solid performance
Lamba Greeny – 6 – Allowed Frodo to get past him. Not much to do
Per – 7 – Quiet day for Per as well, did get forward well and played some good simple balls
Neil – 6 – Not much asked of Neil today, recovered well after playing them onside, got forward well
Mercer – 7 – Got is trademark goal and was always a good outlet. Should have punished the worst left back in the fylde coast a bit more.
Scholes – 9 – Was on the money today. Had a few good chances, created practically everything and defended well when required.
Lizzy – 9 – 2 goals and should have had more. Best game of the season by far. Cemented his place at left wing without a doubt.
Sean – 8 – Worked so hard on what was a frustrating morning. Created chances for his team mates and himself. Another top performance.
Wozzer – 7 – He may have been half cut but he still bagged 2 for us. He knows he can do much better but still did his job as a forward.

Man of the match – Scholes. This accolade will swell his ego some I'm sure but I do feel he was outstanding today and played at the level that we expect him to each week even when the opponents are much tougher.

Made the transition from midfield to forwards fluidly. Kept it simple and never lost possession. Lizzy was up there but he did get sucked in to the moaning session that happened on about 65 mins.

Lets not get too excited by this one though because they were shit. No doubt we had to win but I'm just taking it how it was, an easy training session!!!

Match Ratings

Hunty - As Fiss said superb kicking as we've come to expect from him and a superb save at the end of the game (7)
Daz Worrall - Did what he had to do, simple passes and was never really troubled at right back. Enjoyed his offside trap (6)
Neil - Couldn't really get into the game as the midfield and forwards were in the game more then the defenders, but did what he had to do (6)
Greeny - Won his headers and again composed at the back, shoulda been sent off get killing the forward for composed himself well after that (6)
Par - Same as Greeny pretty much won his headers and had his moan as well about us not reaching him on corners (6)
Mercer - Did well up until his injury, got a goal but didn't get much of the ball (7)
Lizzy - My bum boy and my Man of the Match, thought he caused the full back absolute havoc all game and is making that position his own while scoring goals (10)
Fiss - Makes the centre midfield job look easy, simple passes and work rate which is second to none, another superb performance (8)
Sean - 110% effort and workrate, sensational play to set up Wozza's goal and unfortunately I thought he deserves a goal himself (7)
Wozza - Legend the night before, but still doesnt have to do alot on matchday cause he still seems to score nough said (7)
Subs
George - Came on and did well in the anchoring role in midfield, never got tested as he would've liked cause they were pony (6)
Nico - Didn't have much to do to impress (6)

I agree with the report but

I agree with the report but differ slightly on the ratings...

Hunty-7 One save to make and made it.
Neil-7 Did everything required, was the offside thing but recovered it.
Per-7 Again did what was needed and good heading.
Greeny-6 Bit to complacent but only really had the one scare.
Mercer-7 Better than last few games but not back to best yet.Good goal.
Fiss-7 Ok game by his standards.
Scholes-8 Was the playmaker which we miss to often in my opinion. The gaps in their defence were gaping though, wasn't exactly eye of the needle stuff but still deserves MOM.
Lizz-7.5 Improving each game but end product should be better.
Sean-6 Some well weighted balls to merce but some bad decision making.
Craig-6 Not a good game by standards he has set himself, was obviously still suffering from the booze.

George-6 Did his job fine.
Nico-7 Covered well during our dodgy 3-5-2 stage.
Ross- Not really long enough to rate.

As you can see from my ratings i think the defence deserved the same or better ratings than the forward players. We didnt have to much to do at the back but our attacking players were given lots of chances to score or create and rarely make the right choice or poorly executed things. We'll need to be a lot sharper in final third against the likes of fairhaven, im sure we will be though.

Fiss (not verified) | Wed, 03/12/2008 - 12:06

no time last night...

bags of it now so..

Jan Huntelaar - Not much to do must have been bored shitless - 7
Dez - Good to see Desmond back, provided an outlet not much in the way of defending to do - 7
Greenlands - As above, never looked like conceeding job done - 7
Greenlands moaning twin - Kept everyone on their toes, apart from that stroll in the park as PER usual - 7
Neil - No real problems, still not back to his snappy best - 7
Fiss - Used the ball well and tireless workrate - 7
Scholes - Hate saying this but stood out with his distribution! - 8
Lizzie - Attacks the fullbacks really well, end product came this week with 2 goals - 7
Woz - Didn;t need to break sweat for his double this week -7
Sean - worked hard, unselfish, deserved a goal - 7
George - Bolstered midfield and got involved plenty - 7
Nico - the ever dependable Nico, not a foot wrong - 7
Ross - 6th best left back in Blackpool, mmm? good performance at training though - 7

We never got out of second gear, didn't need to though cos they were pretty gash. And you were right Fiss that left back was rubbish. Scholes my MOM as he stood out, everyone else did their job comfortably. Please Steve, no more 3-5-2, it doesnt work!! Enjoyed the constant barrage from our centre backs, there is no danger of getting away with anything with them two in the team!

Steve Mercer | Wed, 03/12/2008 - 18:58

Sitting on the fence!

That was the most boring set of ratings I have seen since we started doing this.

I see you don't subscribe to the Andy Mac rule of "6 is average"?

Carey | Wed, 03/12/2008 - 19:11

Yep

Noone did anything extraordinairy, Scholes had a better game than usual and we won 5-0. Slightly above average for everyone I would say Mr Sicknote!

Steve Mercer | Wed, 03/12/2008 - 19:18

The Match Official Verdict !!!

Well Guys I wasnt in the best of moods on sunday but what i must say i was impressed with the spirit and wantancy of the boys who wanted to play. It was a perfect morning for football and the fortess. The team was announced by myself and the fact that we have won our previous 5 games explains why i didnt change the side to much. What i will say if anyine has a problem with the team i name then please talk to me in private not in the team talk.
5 nil so my team selection was justified again, we do need to improve but at the end of the day you can only beat what is put in front of you. I truly believe that we can win this league we have some big games dawning and we will have to be like spartans and stand together fight for each and prove that you want this league which i think we deserve.
I am sorry for those players who arent getting the games they want at the moment the team is playing well so it will be harder to gain and keep places, i just ask all of you to respect my judgement rememeber there is a team goal here and not individual goals. If any player is not happy and wants to leave please talk to me first and if carnt agree then i will have no hesitation in signing your transfer forms i only want players playing who are commited to the cause and want to F.C. Excelsior 110%.
