fc brun grove - 12/10/08

An unbiased report from Sundays game against unbeaten FC Brun Grove at Fortress Squires Gate.

Yet again Gaffer Downing was blessed with an abundance of players come 10.15, a few nervous faces around wondering how many more would turn up and asking "will I get a game?". The final count came to 22, the next problem for some was lack of seating even in the spacious Squires gate changing rooms, closely followed by not enough kits to go round. A great problem for the gaffer although you wouldn't know it from the perma-frown on his face.

After sorting out the kit issues Downing named his team to his captivated audience, unchanged from last week: Ropey Ross in goal, Nico, Greeny, Andy Mac and Scholes right to left. Mercer, Fiss, Hopes and Jeff in the middle and Woz and Sean up top. The rest were left to fight it out over the remaining kit and a seat on the bench.

Brun kicked off kicking towards the airport, and after all of 10 seconds were 1-0 down, Wozzer capitalising on a mistake, gliding past 2 defenders and slotting past the keeper, great start. Excelsior soon made it 2, a cross from the right caused panic in the Brun defence and Mercer got between 2 defenders to smash in from 10 yards. Good chances were being created and excelsior took advantage of the big pitch and the space this creates whilst Brun didn't know what had hit them.

Seano made it 3-0 after latching onto a goal kick flicked on by Hopes, good finish similar to alot of goals already this season he's scored. Half an hour gone and again Excelsior were cruising. FC Brun hit Excelsior on the break after good play down their left their striker made it 3-1. Yet another penalty (that must be 8 this year) was won with few complaints after a hand ball from a Woz shot, Woz was not letting anyone else take it and expertly slotted the ball into the corner 4-1.

Great first half, probably the best of the season so far, everyone looked knackered. Second half was all about keeping it solid and again the defence kept it tight with help from a good midfield shape. Hopes hobbled off after a big tackle in the middle of the park that nearly popped the ball giving George and opportunity to impress. Scholes then followed a few mimutes later after first saying he wanted to come off then changing his mind.

Gaffer Steve replaced him with Danny for some fresh legs down the left dropping Jeffrey to left back. It was more or less all Brun without them really testing Ropey in goals, plenty of shots from 25 and 30 yards but none of them anywhwere near. Everytime Brun got near the box the door was slammed shut by the defence. Brun made it 4-2 with 4 minutes to go after another long range effort this time floated over Ropey's head. Willacy came on for Sean and with the last kick of the game made it 5-2 after good work down the left from Danny. The impressive ref blew the final whistle and another team lost their unbeaten record emphatically at the fortress.

Ratings:

Ropey - Not alot to do but did make a couple of good saves and is communicating better with his defence - 8
Nico - Slave driver down that right but quality defender, keeps me in my place - 8
Andy Mac - Kept slamming that door, won some great headers again - 8
Greeny - Great addition to the defence this year, not a foot wrong again - 8
Scholes - Good game at left back, composed and provides good distribution from the back - 8
Fiss - Busy as ever, some good runs and tackles - 7
Hopes - Broke the play up well and got about the pitch well - 7
Jeff - Bit quiet again on the left, worked hard - 7
Sean - Good running as ever and got his goal - 7
Woz - Scored 2, bout it though, bit lazy second half still wouldn't swap him - 7
George - Worked hard when he came on - 6
Danny - Some good runs and good set for the fifth, needs to learn when to pass at the right time - 7
Willacy - not alot of time but scored with a good header - 7
Daz Worrall - didn't play but a 6 anyway.

Again those who didn't get on, Steve Mac x 2, Wez, Ryan, Dezz Worrall, Neil, Lizzie, and new recruit Per keep coming to training and you will get your chance.

Good report man, two things you reminded me of, THAT tackle with Hopesy that sounded like the ball had burst and, yes the ref had a top game didn't he? Anyway to the nitty gritty...

Fair play to Brun as well they didn't give up and took it to us right until the end. It was a good hard battle and aside from our early goals, a close game really.

Ross - Some good saves throughout the game - 7
Nico - Another very solid performance & beasted Merce for the entire game which is alwyas a joy to see - 7
Green - Did his job well and didn't attack the turf this week -7
Scholesy - Some good balls down the left and some nice passes too!! - 7
Geoff - quiet game but battled well, perhaps needs to come inside more to demand the ball n show us what he can do -7
Fiss - Busy in the middle, covered a lot of ground won some good headers as well - 8
Hopesy - Played some intelligent balls behind the defence in the 1st half and THAT tackle - 7
The Rat - Good finish, couple of slack passes but showed good defensive capabilities also - 7
Wazzle - four strides and a finish to score within 10 secs, gave us the confidence to go on and win - 8
Seano - Back to his best some excelent trackin back and a goal as well -8
George - got straight in when on the pitch and won his headers n tackles and didn't give the ball away cheaply - 6
Danny - goo run for the goal but needs to be more aware of play around him - 6
Willacy - His goal spared him a 6 rating, - 6 (fuck it, still a 6)

Well done men same again next week

RATINGS

A view from the line.....

Not a great performance. Defence was good enough with Ross making sure we could relax final ten minutes. Rest of team was average. Sounds daft but good job we got early goals. Thought we were the better first half but they were second half which we almost lost but for last minute goal.

Ross- 8 Some good saves in second half kept an important cushion.
Nico- 6.5 Beaten for first goal, although it was a good one, otherwise good game.
Greeno-6.5 Better performance, no sign of prosthetic leg!
Andy Mac- 7 Continuing his good form.
Scholsey- 8 Pick of the defence, baffled to why he was replaced by another outfield player?
Mercer- 6.5 Good game but not his best.
Hopes- 6.5 Again good but not his best.
Fiss- 7 Great run for final goal edges it for pick of midfield.
Jeff- 6.5 Still not playing like i think he could but still decent game.
Sean- 7 Keeps working hard and getting his rewards now, could be better with distribution though.
Craig- 7 Good goal, good pen but had nothing to feed off second half.
Subs...
George- 6.5 Slotted in well.
Danny- 6 To easily tackled. Needs to run round players not through them. Great work for final goal though.
Andy W- 6 Six touches, five to them and one goal!

MOM- Ross and scholes best outfield.

PS Nice to see you waited until i wasn't here again for team photo!!

Different game from the side

I'm gonna have to bite, I presume that was the intention? As Fiss said it is a different game from the side, but playing in that game at no point from kick off to final whistle did I think we were gonna lose that game, we were in control even when they were pressing. We had teh game won at half time we just needed to be disciplined second half which we were. For me it was one of our best performances because we saw the game out professionally.

Steve Mercer | Tue, 14/10/2008 - 16:54

Dezzy its ratings not

Dezzy its ratings not rantings. Which game were you watching? I know its a different game from the side lines but from the pitch, which is a much better view, FC Brun grove were never in the game. We had it won in 45 minutes, we'd done the hard bit and in the second half we protected what we had and saw out the win. Muy profesional, si me estás preguntando.

Ratings

Rossco - 9 - Best game of his life. Great kicking, distribution and saves.
Nico - 8 - Another class performance. Keeps the calm
Greenday - 7 - Becoming to expect these top performances now
Macca - 8 - Didn't lose a thing and with a great work ethic
Mercer - 7 - Nice finish and good contribution
Ben Dover - 7 - Worked his socks off, good link between attack and midfield. All Hope was lost, bone cruncher ended it
Jeffers - 8 - Disciplined throughout. Involved in pretty much everything in the first half
Sean - 9 - Better and better each week. Starting to play without fear once again.
Woz - 8 - Won us the game with two goals with impeccable timing that killed off Brun.
Danny - 6 - Best game he's had but has much more to give us
George - 6 - Not enough time to impose his presence but got suck right in
Willerpy - 6 - Decent goal, won't go o.t.t because we get fed up hearing about it.

Good innings lads

It's ok Fiss I don't need a rating!!!

Fiss and Merce...

Can't be best view on the pitch as you failed to see the best player on the day, scholsey! You honestly believe we meant to see the game out in a professional way like we are professionals? Thats easy to say after the game but i dont believe it. For 70 mins we tried to score more, they matched us and with a bit more nouse in final third they could have caused bigger problems. Giving ross a 9 i think proves my point. Im not saying it was a bad performance just wasn't great.
PS Hardly call a couple of sentences ranting! Besides, seems when i was away comments were pretty scarce.

Dezzy

We all appreciate you taking the time out to write stuff and your input definitely causes a stir. Am I sensing sour grapes because Nico is a beast at RB?
I hope not Dez cos we don’t ride like that, this ain’t the civil service where promotion is given to the person with the least amount of knives in their back and the person with the least knives in his back threw the most knives – if you get what I’m saying.
Get behind the team 100%, be at training, don’t miss a match and win your place back the hard way. The flip side is find another club.
We would have been beaten had we played as bad as you perceived Dezzy. We didn't and we won comfortably, there's only you saying that we didn't.
Or have I got it all wrong?

Mr Ripper

Fiss, Please could you explain the knive thing again?

Jack The Ripper (not verified) | Thu, 16/10/2008 - 22:18

Fissle

Predictable to assume ive got sour grapes regarding nico. Actually i presumed i would have to wait my turn again and im happy with it so long it applies to everyone. I understand steves task of keeping everyone happy. What has fucked me off is questioning my commitment!! In 3 years the only games ive missed are when im out the country, thats training as well. Ive even showed after stag dos and birthdays when being out of town- and withheld on the booze (have to at my age.) Not gonna question your commitment but would you have stuck around missing as many games as i do? Wierd thing is i actually did think we played quite well last week just not as good as the match report said so maybe ive been misunderstood. I am behind the team 100% and as for finding another team, eat shit! By the way not gonna fall out about this, its all good banter.

Dezzle (not verified) | Fri, 17/10/2008 - 12:54

One more thing...

Just one more thing regarding knife throwing cos i only just got it. If you've actually read my ratings i think you'll find that i didn't say anything bad about anyone and i said nico had a good game just not quite as good as andy mac for instance, and the scoring was following andys system- 6 average etc which every starting player received more than. I'll keep my opinions to myself in future though. Nowt more to say on the matter, see you sunday.

Dezzle (not verified) | Fri, 17/10/2008 - 19:42

Bringing me off

What is that match report on about, I never said I wanted to come off. No-one should ever bring me off as I'm a Norcross International, 5th best left back in the Fylde Coast.

Steve, don't you ever bring me off again or I will boycott your 30th party!!

Healthy

As many of you are commenting on how good or bad people are and commitment is, i think its really heathy for the team, just be careful on how people word their talk, i understand why some people are unhappy about getting dropped or getting brought off but i think the job in hand is an impossible one and i think you should do your talking on the training ground on the pitch or to the manager! i think some people maybe need to take into account that we all lead different life's i.e. kids, jobs and alcohol! (scholesy) and it is sunday league... and everyone opinion its just an a opinion!

And as for neil and scholsey fighting it out for a place well your both completly different players, NEIL quick pesters wingers gets back well but cant do much with the ball! SCHOLSEY clever, doesn't dive in and plays inteligent balls, however lacks pace and maybe fitness when is called upon to get back fast when the oposition is on the attack!

As for this comment i have strategically left, i think your all bollocks get over yourselves I am the best keeper you have ever met and i up for getting mongoed sunday....

Best wishes Wesley Stiff!
