frenchmans cove 21/09/08
Andy Mac has kindly submitted his version of events from Sundays game:
The First league game at the new ‘stadium’ and the order of the day was three points for Excelsior as they faced Frenchmans Cove, unbeaten in there first four starts with for wins.
And so Excelsior lined up with Ross in goals, Daz Worrall at right back, Neil David Harrop at left back and Nico and Andy Mck in the centre. In midfield Mercer started on the right, Jeffrey on the left, with the reliable combination of George and Fiss in the centre. Up front Andy Willacy got the nod ahead of Sean, partnered by the in-form Craig Worrall.
The game started off at a good pace with both teams trying to take advantage of the big pitch. Exclesior made the most of the early possession spreading the ball around well with the midfield trying to find their range with a view to threading the ball behind the Cove’s defence. Thwarted by some questionable flagging from the opposition’s linesman it would only be a matter of time until Excelsior opened the deadlock. Eight minutes into the match Mercer broke free down the right and squared the ball across the face of the goal where Neil David Harrop calmly slotted the ball home beneath the oncoming goalkeeper with his right foot. Five minutes later a Cove move broke down and the ball was swiftly moved across the midfield to Mercer, just outside the centre circle in his own half, Merce threaded and inch perfect pass through to Wazza who bagged his first of the game. Wazza’s second was shortly to follow as a Cove defensive error let the big man in again to calmly round the keeper for his second. Two up and the football was looking good from Excelsior, with the trouncing of the week before firmly out of their minds. A few glimmers of Cove attacks led to a couple of saves from Ross and a penalty shout, which was promptly turned down by the ref. After 30 minutes of play the next moment of controversy was to fall when the hardworking Andy Willacy took advantage of some slack defending, rolled the ball goal bound only for Wazza to knick it on the line. Wazza was adjudged to have been offside by the linesman and the referee agreed. Moments later Mercer found himself clean through, but failed to round the advancing goalkeeper, missing the chance. A dodgy ten-minute spell was to follow from The Excelsior as the formation started to become a little shabby; this led to a booking for Fiss following a reckless tackle against a Cove midfielder, desperately trying to break up the play. Fiss was lucky not to have walked 4 minutes later with another bad tackle in front of he Cove’s crowd but was spared the early shower by the ref. This bad passage of play led to Cove scoring a goal as Excelsior failed to adequately clear their lines and a loose Mercer pass was played back in to the box for the Cove’s number 10 to roll in across the face of the keeper, 3-1. Just before the interval Andy Mck won the ball in the centre of the park and lifted the ball over the Cove’s defence for Wazza to run onto and clinically finish high into the net from a tight angle, another Wazzle hatrick.
After some words of encouragement from the Excelsior Gaffer, Stevee D, it was the Cove who started the better of the two teams, seemingly benefiting from the breather. The offensive play was in the main restricted to Cove shooting from distance by way of Excelsior’s solid defending. The large pitch was starting to take it’s toll on some of the Ex men, leading to Andy Willacy (who had just taken a shoe to the dish) to make way for Sean Lonsdale, Wazzle to make way for Scholsey and George to make way for Ben. With 30 minutes of the game remaining it was up to the subs to get out there and prove themselves. The fresh legs seemed to work and With Jeffrey now up front, a good flick on from Sean saw him clean through only for him to slice the ball wide. Two minutes later Jeffrey returned the favour for Sean flicking on to put Sean through on goal to bag his first with a neat finish over the advancing keeper. Sean screamed in glee as the ball nestled in the back of the net shouting “I’m back” as he ran away in celebration, his new boots sparkling in the morning sunshine. Excelsior began to find their feet once again, playing some intelligent football down the left and right flanks. Not so intelligent however was Scholsey’s vicious tackle on the advertising boards – tantamount to vandalism really! With the Ex men down to 10 whilst the Ginger one wiped the blue paint of his knee cap, the Cove started to find a little more space, putting the Excelsior defence on the ropes. Again most opportunities were taken from distance without Ross having to make a save. With Scholsey back on the pitch Excelsior picked up the pace once more and Fiss slid Scholsey in down the left and an inch perfect ball between goalkeeper and defenders found Sean who converted for his second, 6-1. With only minute’s remaining Sean found himself clean through again but this time his effort was stopped by a good save from the Cove’s keeper. The Cove’s resolve had been broken leading to an assault on Steve Mercer. A bad tackle from behind followed by an attempted throttle – the defender was booked and then subbed - The Rat had his man! The referee blew for the final whistle and the game ended 6-1.
MOM was an extremely difficult task to pick, but for me it was probably Wazza. Sounds like a copout but another three goals and all of them expertly taken gave the rest of the team the confidence to settle down and do their stuff.
Shouts of the day include: -
1) Frenchman Cove’s Defender: “ Will somebody smash that number 6”
Scholsey: “Why, can’t you do it yourself?”
2) Sean: “I’m back” – following his first goal of the game.
3) Andy Mck (Following Scholsey kicking the advertising boards): “Did anyone see that fat ginger lad kick the advertising boards?”
4) Various member of the Frenchman Cove Crowd Directed at Steve Mercer, following a fracas with a Cove defender: “Get up Max Branning”
5) Screams at various points during the game from the Cove when Excelsior strikers shot after the ref had blown for dubious offside flagging: “THEY’VE DONE IT AGAIN REF”
6) and Mercer’s retort: “Yeh, that’s why you’re losing 6-1, cause we keep kicking the ball way!”
7) The ref to Frenchman’s Cove after the game (following a load of abuse off them): “ You lot can’t play football for shit!”
And finally, the ratings…..

Ratings...
Good report Andy apart from scoring 3 goals and only being 2 up?? I agree with your ratings including myself. I was guilty of a few dodgy headers and loose balls first half but recovered them and improved second half. Thought i might have sneaked a 7. Anyhow my ratings....(not Andys scoring system)
Ross-7.5 Mixed game, some good saves but couple off iffy kicks and should have picked a few up.
Neil-8.5 Great game, just needs to be careful not to get caught out going forward to often.
Nicco-8 Solid apart from a few dodgy moments in their 10 min spell 1st half.
Andy-8.5 Again solid and great in the air, good positioning hides the lack of pace.
Me-7.5 Solid enough and good positioning but a bit loose and didnt help much going forward as i like to.
Jeff-8 A lot better game today, should have tested the keeper at least though.
Fiss-8.5 Everywhere.
George-8 Continuing his good spell of late.
Mercer-8 Good game and back to his shit giving best.
Andy W-7.75- Good game and worked hard but not giving to much goal threat. Bit of a Kuyt.
Wozza-8.5 Working a lot harder than he used to and its helping the team defensively and cant stop bagging. 3 well taken goals.
Sean-8 Great 30 mins, scored 2 nearly 3 (round the keeper sean)
Scholes-7.5 Good 20 mins, great ball for Seans goal.
Hopes-7.5 Good 20 mins, great megs!

Hook line and ....
Dez, Me n Merce had a bet to see how quick you would bite following the 6 rating!! Merce had you for before 21:30 and I had you for before 20:30, 00:11 isn't bad though!!
A little harsh on the old "good positioning hides the lack of pace" comment! Although, by retorting I too have fallen for your bate - I just couldn't let it go!
Munchkins...
Ha ha, didnt let my rating impair my judgement on your rating though, or did i?? Thinking about it i did consider a 9 so maybe i did, who knows? (Had to get the little back-handed complement in!)
Match Report
Check out Frenchmans Cove's match report as well. A pretty damming assessment of their performance from the guy who does their match reports. I didn't think they were that bad!! Note the sensoring of a swear word also - unlike our potty mouthed team!
Top of the League
Well what can i say an impressive display lads must say that i am very proud the way you boys have started the season i have tried to deliever what i promised and now its time for you guys to deliver on the pitch and with 5 wins from 6 you have duly delivered. I seriously believe we can mount a serious title bid this season with the start we have and the squad we have, we habe to continue the way we have started the next 6 games are critical and the target again has to be 5 wins from the next 6 games that is championchip winning form.
I know some of the lads are getting a little bit frustrated at the scenario of not playing but please remember that this is a squad and we need to keep it together if we are to win this league we have strenght in depth and i will do my best to rotate it as we go forward so everyone gets a fair crack of the whip. I want us win the league and the teams i pick rest with me and the results of the back of that decision, if anyone has a problem then please feel free to talk to me and i will try my best to anwer and solve it. BUt please be patient on the other hand if you are in the team please do not become complacient as then is a good 8 lads chomping at your heels for your place.

V's cove
Thanks for the report Macca.
You forgot about the shout at the start of the game, which kinda set the tone.
Cove Gaffer - C'mon Cove, let’s go top of the league.
Ex Skipper - C'mon Excelsior, lets STAY top of the league.
A little biased cos I said it but I felt it was nice little side winder.
Ratings
Rossco - 7 - Good game, some very poor kicking which put us under at times.
Neil - 8 - Great goal, didn't give the winger a blade of grass, forgot to get back in once.
Nico - 8 - Class. Won his headers, tackles and battles.
Macca - 10 - Top notch. Not seen him play like that for maybe 5 years. My MOM
Dezzy - 7.5 - Less mistakes than ever. Played some good football and didn't moan.
Geoff - 8 - Good game. Drifted in and out of it but I like the way he plays.
George - 8 - Mixed it up well. Showed great endurance. Kept the game ticking
Mercer - 8(football)10(wind ups) - That little mouth got to work again. Played well and involved the players around him, great game.
Willerpy - 8 - Does the dirty work that goes unseen by most. Movement alone allowed Wozzer in behind a few times. Tracks back not afraid to get stuck in, I like that.
Wozzer - 9 - Compare this Woz to last season, 100% improvement. Nice to see some hunger from the big man and he's playing good stuff, 1-2 lay off's with his back to goal. Now we know your ready play it around we should get you in 10 times a game easy. Very impressed with Woz so far.
Ben Hope - 8 - Another one of my favorites, good introduction. Worked hard and plays the game very well, just how I like it.
Sean - 8 - He is back. Goals very well taken. Good to see the shoulder to shoulder against the defender is back again as well.
Scholes - 8 - Great intro. Dubious about the slide in to the hoardings but played 2 killer balls into the box and set one up.
A good way to send those Cove slags packing.
Onwards and upwards lads
Fiss
Bites again!
Fiss, just a half point less than anyone else in the team is quite a complement coming from you. Funny thing is i thought i made a few more mistakes than usual (although recovered them) and my passing wasn't quite up to scratch. Do we see a different game going on or this part of another wager with the rat and glassback? Time- 22.50
ps Gave myself .5 less than anyone else so cant moan about it
Fine report Andrew.
First game at the new 'stadium' for me. Buzzin man, lovely pitch, which i've no doubt we can take full advantage of. Nice to see everyone switched on with the shape, keep's the pitch compact.

Andy willacy. worked hard very unlucky not to get on the score sheet, greedy fucking wazzle!!!. 7
Wazzer. in my opinion the big difference in our league, brimming with confidence and working hard, another hatrick, keep it up man and we'll win this league comfortably, quality. my MoM just edging the centre half pairing. 8
