Excelsior visited YMCA in Lytham to take on St Annes Ex-Service.
Once again the Yella Fellas had a squad of 18 to choose from and it was down to assistant Jon Evans to name the team and make the changes as Gaffer Steve was away. The team was Ross between the sticks, Daz Woz again at right back, Nico and Greeny in the middle, Neil on the left. IN midfield Mercer, Fiss, George and Jeff, up top last seasons duo Sean and Wozzer.
Excelsior started well and were in control from very early on, the only blip being George having to go off after a couple of knocks after typically full blooded challenges. Andy willacy came on on the left with Jeff moving into the middle. Excelsior took the lead when Mercer hit his first touch of the season past teh keeper from 25 yards. Woz soon made it 2 after persistance down the left and a typically good finish.
St Annes were then awarded a dubious penalty which was duly put into row Z by their striker. Soon after the young ref evened things up and gave Excelsior an equally dubious pen, Greeny was given the honour and he cooly put it into the corner, 3-0 and cruising. ON half time St Annes scored a lucky goal from about 45 yards, Im sure the striker didn't mean to shoot but it somehow looped over Ross and we went in 3-1 up.
Second half was much the same Excelsior well in control and using the good playing surface and wide pitch well. Number 4 came after a long kick from Ross went over the defenders head, Mercer gambled and lobbed the on rushing keeper from outside the box. Seano then made his mark on the game after breaking clear of the defence and finishing well.
As the game went on the refereeing got worse, it was a shame for the young lad but he had no control over the game and just went with the loudest shout. This didn't affect Excelsior and Wozzer after missing about 8 chances finally got his second, 6-1, could have been 15. They got a second half consolation 5 mis before the end, too little too late though.
Ryan came on for his first run out of the season for Daz Woz and then Clarkey replaced Mercer, again 4 lads didn't get on showing the depth we have this season.
Another solid show from the defence which has been the key so far this season, with the players we have we are always going to score loads of goals but we are now not letting in stupid goals. Great performance.
