Progress Sports & Social - 17/08/2008
3rd game of the season for the yellows, after a heavy defeat and a big one win, everyone wondered what Excelsior had in store against last season foes Progress.
Once again manager Downing had selection issues and had a squad of around 20 to choose from, unfortunately he had to also don the goalkeepers shirt as the ever reliable Ross was unavailable. After a few headaches the team was named as Gaffer in goal, Daz Woz, Nico, Greeny and Neil from right to left, in midfield Matt Lisgo, Fiss, Ben Hopes and Jeff, up top Craig Woz and Andy willacy got the nod.
Once again the ugliest and gobbiest left midfielder in Sunday league lined up for Progress so the subs positioned themselves on his side of pitch for some banter.
Excelsior started disjointed and couldn't settle on the junior pitch that resembled a basketball court it was so small. Hilario in goal provided a couple of comedy moments early on until Wozzer put Excelsior in the lead showing great strength and a good finish. Progress hit back after some dodgy marking from the yella fellas. Daz Woz had Ian Dowie on the left in his back pocket and Excelsior started to take control.
Half time came and it was 1-1, we had been here before with this team and lost 3 times last year, big chance to set the record straight.... and Excelsior did. 6 goals were banged in the second half, Wozzer notching another 3 times, Scholesy burgled a tap in for his 3rd of the season, Fiss missed a pen but converted the rebound (who's next in line as Pen taker??), and George got on the end of a corner. Great performance second half from everyone, Sean was superb when he came on and the other subs George and Scholes did well and notched.
The defence was well marshalled by Greeny, a great influence at the back along with Nico who was very solid again, something we missed last year. Play like that every week and we will be up there this year. To those who didn't get on, keep with it, your time will come, gaffer Steve has a difficult job on his hands.

Think steve has nailed it on the head there, but in all fairness after the previous game and defeat i was pleased and proud at how the lads responded all the subs for still coming down you will all get your chance and when you do just don't waste it.
A great effort from all players still a few things we need to work on but we dug in and played as a team which really pleased me. wozza and andy both worked hard and with the midfield playing well in support and the defence looking solidwith the mighty gob of greeny and the magic of hilario it was a good performance.
