North West Kitchens 1/3/2009

Another Sunday and another game against NWK. At first they seemed to be our main rivals but we've seen that much of this lot lately that they're almost part of the team. However friendly we have become the 90 minutes are anything but friendly, most of us still have the NWK calling card on our ankles from the last time we met. A new formation was rolled out on the sound advice of assistant manger John Evans. John put his request in for this line up 2 years ago and after a loss last week it seems Steve eventually got round to looking at John's request. 4-5-1 was the formation and filling those positions were, Ross in nets, Dezzy, Nico, Perky and Gaz in the back four. Midfield, Smudger, Truby, Fiss, Hair doo Hopes and Wozzer. Upfront all on his lonesome was Seano.

On the bench was Mr. Punctual Mark Green, George, Macca, Rhino, Lizzy, Jimmy, Carey, Neil and John, yes the facilities at Squires Gate can cater
for all those subs and Managment.

Off we went kicking towards the warm up area. It took some time for the formation to start working in an attacking method but defensively we were sound. Everything that NWK threw at us was soon tidied up and moved along.

A couple of good chances came our way. A well struck half volley hit by Truby was on its way but for an excellent save from the NWK stopper. Sean watched a headed effort go just over after some nice work down the left involving Hopes, Gaz, Woz and Fiss. Wozzer was causing their back line problems everytime he got on the ball and an Excelsior goal was on the cards.

The opener came after another NWK attack broke down. Perky, with the ball at his feet, was struggling to see a pass on. After shaping a couple of ways he played a 40 yard ball behind the NWK back line for Sean to run on to and brilliantly chip over the advancing keeper in to the top corner. 1-0 us

Half time

In we went after a physical and tiring 45 minutes (expect nothing else from NWK) with our heads held high after getting the vital goal and controlling the game for long periods. Steve came in gave his usual team talk, picked on the ones that don't answer back and sent us on our way. The main shout was regarding NWK fitness and endurance so we knew we had to work them hard in order to open up the game.

Out we came with the attitude to finish off the opposition and hold on to our clean sheet. The pattern of play was much similar to the first half only this time we looked more threatening in an attacking capacity. Our second came after 10 minutes of the restart. Wozzer was sent down the flank, again, skinned the right back, again, got in the box, again and was brought down by the centre half after leaving him for dead. Wozzer tucked the penalty away in to the keepers bottom right corner.

NWK came in to the game briefly as all they had in their locker was throwing 8 or 9 players up front for all free kicks, throw ins, corners and a couple of goal kicks. Our organisation at the back thwarted all assaults on our goal. Nico even cleared what looked a certain goal off the line with his head (Basics, always have a man on the posts).

2-0 and cruising. We were creating plenty in their half. A few times we'd be unlucky and a few times we played the wrong ball but number 3 came eventually. Wozzer was played through on goal, he ran on to the ball, took the keeper on and after making the angle hard for himself he still scored.

The final whistle came and 3-0 seemed a fair result. We could have had more however if every chance we made went in we'd never lose a game in our lives so 3 seemed about right and we deserved the clean sheet.

Man of the Match – Gaz Jakins – A great game. I don't think he lost a tackle or a header all game. Solid at the back and looked to play the ball in to feet when he could. Made some great over lapping runs and found
space all the time. A great second game in Excelsior colours.

Ratings

Ross – 6 – Not a lot to do. Palmed one way in the 1st. Some good kicking and some dreadful kicking.
Dezzy – 6 - A good game on the whole but let down when trying to hold the line.
Nico – 8 – Top performance. Didn't give away a thing all game.
Perky- 8- Won all his aerial battles as per!! Set up a goal and prevented any breaches of ours.
Gaz – 9 – A great game. Frame it and keep it, it's yours!
Smudge – 7- Held his position well all game. Involved as always with many of our attacking moves and set up a few good chances.
Hopes – 7 – Another good game for the Lego man. The disallowed goal was a screamer. Good play making throughout.
Truby – 8 – Class return. Won everything in the air against the big man, nearly scored and nearly killed a couple of their players.
Wozzer – 8 – 2 goals and a great game. Always caused them problems when on the ball and saw the ball alot.
Sean – 8 – What a fucking goal!!! Worked hard all game and played some football. Get used to playing on your own up there and we will be flying.

Well done guys. We've got a game and a half to look forward to next week, Fairhaven away. I can't wait to play this lot, hopefully it will be another good physical battle.

Any comments about the new formation or anything regarding this game are welcome and as always we would love to see some other opinions on the match ratings.

Fissle...

In my defence fissy pop i was busy making sure my man or sometimes 2 men didnt get a run on me and it helps if you talk before the game how you want it at the back, defend or hold a tight line? I wasnt told either! I felt i adjusted to it though. Holding such a high line on a big pitch is a mistake. The last 2 weeks its caused a few problems in the 1st half with a little wind against. Playing offside is fine, but not just 10 yards into your your own half. If we come up against anyone as good as our own strikers or midfielders who can play a well timed ball it could be costly.
However thats only my opinion and having said that im happy to play however suits the team but it would be good to discuss how before.
As for the 6 fiss i expect nothing more from you. Nobody got the better of me or skinned me. I know i'll never be the type of player you like though!

Wind your neck in Dezzle

Chill out Dezzy. You have only looked at the negatives, you didn't mind me saying you had a good game on the whole?!
How else could you be biggest moaner without only seeing the negative??
You must be doing something right Dezzy because you're 7th out of the whole team for apparances with 15 games(4 as sub), the highest is 20 so you're not doing badly pal.

Fiss

PS- wasn't it clear we were playing the offsides after keeping them on the 1st time?

Fiss (not verified) | Wed, 04/03/2009 - 14:28

Formation

This Formation was perfect for us, we controled that midfield very well and made it tough for them to play through and thats one of the reasons they had to convert to the long ball every time which made it easyer for us guys at the back, thats team work boys, also with a little more support for our lone stricker more goals are going to flow. Im sure with a little more time and practice on this formation this wont be a problem. Well played lads, hold your heads high.
Bring on Fairhaven.

Ratings etc

Great game to watch, with good football being played and more than anything else, 11 players that wanted to win from beginning to end. Didn't spot any shirkers on the pitch and didn't see anybody back down against tough oppostion.

I thought the 4-5-1 worked perfectly as it gave us the opportunity to play the ball in to waz and let him attack the opposition. The three man centre midfield allowed us to play short passes around the middle and prevented our back four from being overrun. In future games the key will be the midfield trio mopping up the second balls and breakin down the oppostions midfield from the off.

Ross - made a couple of good saves actually and claimed the ball well - some indifferent kicking - 7
Dezzy - struggled to adjust to holding the line in the 1st half and really got into the match in the second half - 7
Gaz - quality performance again. Won some brilliant tackles and headers and distributed well - 8
Per - Won everyting in the air, played a good physical game and a dream pass to set up Sean!! - 7
Nico - Good distribution and dealt with everyting his way not to mention a goalline clearence - 7
Smudge - quiet first half but saw more of them game in the second half attacking well down the right - 7
Wozza - Suited him well on the left. Received the ball into feet and looked like the waz of old. Suffered some harsh tackles but showed what he's about with his brace - 8
Fiss - Cleared up well in the middle and continued to rally the team. Tackled hard and distributed well - 7
Hopesy - Another quality performance. Good crossing, heading and created chances with good movement - 7
True-bee - Showed determination and aggression in the middle which we have missed in recent weeks. Always looked dangerous baring down on goal - 7
Seano - Superb display from the lone striker. Great finish got us going and linked up well with the team. Superb work rate. Would like to see him shift the ball out of his feet and shoot like he does at training - 9
Carey - needs to start games to really show what he can do. Some good touches but not long enough to get involved - 6
Greenday - managed to pole-axe their striker within 5 mins of being on the pitch - a hero in my book! - 6
Georgy Boy - not long enough to impact but I reckon another 5 mins would've seen someone tagged with some scottish passion - 6

Roll on Fairhaven. If we show the same determination we will turn them over.

Well what to Say

Well guys just want to thank the 8 that turned up for training last night in that weather thats comitment. As for sunday thought it worked very well it took us 20 minutes to gel, but once we did, it looked like a stroll in the park. Because you worked hard for each other and looked like a team. It was good to watch and you all looked like you wanted to be there, a complete contrast to the week before. The formation suits us but also it gives us an advantage of knowing that we can change it around at any point. Lets hope the same 18 players turn up on sunday for the biggest game of our season so far. I want us to play in the same way i want us to enjoy it and enjoy playing football the way i know we can.

The Gaffer (not verified) | Wed, 04/03/2009 - 10:58

Stato...and gaffer...

Sorry fissle its just im sensing a few folk are after MY moaner trophy. Yes i did realise we were playing offside but i was a little wary of how high we wanted to play it. Maybe cos for the 1st 30 mins their small striker was perched near me and i didnt like leaving him behind me. I admit though it happened one to many times although i did think i played them off last time but im not gonna argue with Carey, he can see better than i could. Guess what im saying is i dont want folk thinking i was just dawdling and not aware.

PS We have conceded 2 goals recently against NWK and Paris from playing to higher line and then stood moaning about it after. I just think we'd be safer a few yards further back. I know i love playing against sides with to higher line and we murder teams that try it against us. Maybe im wrong, just my opinion.

Dezzy (not verified) | Wed, 04/03/2009 - 18:40

i am going to make another

i am going to make another point hear regarding latest gossip on this crazy site. firstly dez, offside. play to the fecking whistle pal dont you, end of story. and also it was your throw which caused the goal against paris.
secondly if i start getting my hair cut at geezers do i get a discount on the sun bed in the backroom.

legohead (not verified) | Fri, 06/03/2009 - 18:09

Lego-man....

Errm...dont recall 'playing to the whistle' a problem and something everyone knows but thanks for that anyway, mong! As for the throw-in i dont see how throwing the ball to your own players feet down the line is the throwers fault, or am i remembering it wrong? I will retract it being the fault of a high line though, think is was a more a case of switching off. Anyway im bored of that topic now.
