Venue : Fortress Squires Gate

First game of the new year for Excelsior, and first game for 6 weeks, Excelsior needed to get a win to make ground on Fleetwood CC and Fairhaven.

As expected another healthy turnout in the dressing room at 10.20 including new signings Smudger and Gaz and a welcome return of Carey and Jon Evans. Difficult decisions for the manager, when the team was finally announced just before kick off we started Hunty in the sticks, Nico and Neil Full backs, Green and Per in the middle. Engine room Hopes got the nod with Fiss in the middle, Mercer and Lizzie on the flanks. Familiar looking strikeforce of Sean and Woz. I would say without doubt the strongest bench in the league of, and in no particular order Dezzy Worrall, George, Smudger,Ross, Carey and Jon Evans.

Excelsior started like a team that had not played for 6 weeks and couldn't get any rhythm, it probably looked disjointed from the sidelines. Credit to Talbot who seemed to have signed some new players and looked a decent side. Not much I can recall about the first half worth writing about apart from Greeny hitting the post with shot from 20 yards.

Half time came and the troops were sent to the dressing room for a dressing down, the Gaffer tore into the team for what he thought was a poor performance, few disagreed with him although I think we've set ourselves very high standards.

Second half was more like it and there was a bit more urgency in the play and the elusive goal soon came. A good move saw the ball fall to The Hopester on the edge of the box and he placed the ball into the top corner, 2 in 2 now, some would say prolific. Greeny had to depart soon after with breathing difficulties which saw the long awaited return of Carey. A re-shuffle at the back with Nico moving to the middle and Mercer dropping back to right back.

Seano should have put the game to bed with 2 glorious chances, the first saw him clean through after a good run but his shot was straight at the keeper and the second was from a great ball from Fiss and Sean failed to connect properly from 6 yards.

Smudger was introduced for Lizzie . A few scares at the back were averted and apart from a couple ddogy back passes that Hunty had to deal with Excelsio saw the game out well.

Full Time:
Excelsior 1- 0 FC Talbot

Ratings:

Hunty - Quality again, not alot of saves to make but some good punches and kicking (8)
Nico - Kept dangerman Chadwick quiet on their left, slotted into Centre back well (8)
Neil - Lots of energy as ever and managed to keep the winger at bay... just (7)
Per - Good commanding performance, won countless headers and tackles (8)
Greengrass - Solid until he had to go off, unlucky not to score (7)
Lizzie - Ran with the ball welland looked dangerous (7)
Fiss - Put himself about as usual, made some vital tackles and used the ball well (7)
Hopes - Best player first half for me, another good game and good goal (8)
Sean - Couldnt get into it really and would expect to put both good chances away (7)
Woz - Again struggled, saw nothing in the first half, glimpses in the second (6.5)
Carey - Didn't see alot of the ball on the right but tracked well (6.5)
Smudger - Some good touches (7)

MOM had to go to Per for me, clean sheet again for the defence and Per was the pick of the defence.

Good report

Nice work Merce, you got the facts in. All I would like to add...
"The lads that need a haircut lets get them done, we looked like the fucking Monkey's out their today"

Hunty - 8 - Another top draw performance. Made the one on one save that nobody remembers and dealt with the dodge back passes really well.
Nico - 8 - Class. Nothing got past him and played the ball well.
Per - 9 - I just love the way he throws himself at ball or man to stop us conceding. Won everything.
Greenday - 7 - Wasn't well, started off alright just ran out of puff. Great shot in 1st 1/2.
Neil - 7 - Nearly an eight. Did really well for 90 minutes against winger and a full back at times.
Mercer - 7 - Played well and did us all proud, playing well out of position.
Hopes - 8 - Hero of the week. Really gave his all for the cause and won us the game. 2 in 2, watch out Woz and Sean.
Lizzy - 8 - Played well skipping past players and looking for passes. Was our main outlet and threat in the 1st half. Links up well just need more movement/support.
Sean - 7 - Also nearly an eight but playing up front you are judged on your goals. Some nice passing, turning and general play just lacking that sure touch of a finish.
Wozzer - 7 - Like Sean, played some good stuff, did well running at players and got involved in some rough stuff which is always good to see. The form comes back when the confidence does.

Man of the Match - Per - Class for 90 minutes

Subs
Carey - Looked a little lost at times but over 12 months out will do that to you. We all saw the glimmers of the old Carey so keep going.
Smudge - Played well, saw a lot of the ball and made Talbot work down their right. Looks more like a striker than a winger.

Well done, mission accomplished and 3 points nearer.
Not the prettiest and we rode our luck a couple of times. However we still won and managed to oil the pistons after the xmas lay off so I say nice work.
Next week will be much better.

General Fiss...

Generous Fiss morelike...
Good to see everyone down after last Sundays poor turnout, personally i think it takes the piss!! But it obviously doesnt matter if you show or not so guess theres no need for anyone to bother next time.

Ratings...

Hunty-8 Little to do with their woeful shooting, kicking was excellent.
Neil-6 Didnt do much wrong.
Per-8 Decent on the floor, superb in the air.
Greenday-6 Couple of good scrambled clearances, think it was him anyway.
Nico-6 Fairly quiet, bit more to do at CB and dealt with it.
Mercer-6 Decent first 30 mins, poor second 30 mins, then covered well at RB.
Lizz-6 Few decent runs but lacking end product.(Seem to write that a lot)
Fiss-6.5 Good energy again but lack of forward vision.
Hopes-7 Decent game, super goal!
Wozzer and Sean-7 Thought they were trying really hard but lacked any decent service.

Subs-

Carey- Needs more games.
Smudge- Looks good player.

Overall a below average display with Hunty being our playmaker creating 2 3rds of our chances. Lucky to win with both teams having same amount of clear chances, we prob edged the half ones.

I agree with fiss... If

I agree with fiss... If Merce is being honest as well I think the only reason he gave me a 6.5 is because I kept yelling at him for his constant poor control, bad passing, bad decision making, lack of pace etc through-out the 90minutes. Carey got his cause he's stolen Merce's position, simple. Besides that pretty accurate reports, can't be arsed singling players out cause I think it's a team game.... On the whole not bad for 6 weeks off, 6.5 on 10.

oh dear

thats poor Woz, no agendas with me, not interested in sucking up to people cos theyve scored 23 goals, or they're the captain/manager etc etc, just say as I saw it and I thought you were pretty poor by your standards and Im not the only one either. This isn't about having a go at poeple, its a laugh to try and have banter.

Steve Mercer | Mon, 19/01/2009 - 13:13

Im not going to do the

Im not going to do the comments and ratings thing anymore...

For the first game back i didn't expect anything glam, however i did expect effort and that was not wanting, forwards where a little rusty but its going to happen, we no they can bag goals for fun. It wasn't going to be easy after 6 weeks but it was done, we put it to bed, 3 points in the bag, and i also though there was a great togetherness of the team...

Lets try and just keep our shape thoughout the game, at times the midfield where disjointed, but hey we will be back to our best, Well done fella's...

I think constructive

I think constructive feedback will benefit the team... thats why im not doing ratings... all i see it do is cause bad feeling - i think where all old enough to know when we have had a good, poor or average game, if people are havin a poor or average game, during the game support them, after all where quick to give out the applause! encourage them! from the side lines too! after all were seeing the game differently too. but listen!!!

No body benefits from negative comments and there is a fine line between banter and havin a dig!

I may be hydrolics at footy but i feel i know the game, what harms it, and what benefits it... i mean fuck me even cameltoe harrop knows the basics!

Wez is his own man

Lets not stop the ratings. Personally, I fucking love em!!
If Wez wants to not bother doing them then fine but everyone else is open to use the record books.
There might be the odd winge here and there but when we look back in years to come I'm sure we'll all laugh our cocks off at some of the comments.

So I say keep it rated, keep it real, keep it gangsta

What can i say fellas a new

What can i say fellas a new year same result a win !!!!
Thats all it was really not much quality but 6 weeks without a game dont help much. Sometimes games are won with determination and thats what we had in abundance sometimes thats better than quality. As for the squad its looking strong for next year id say especially when were in div 1 cos every game is a hard 1 as we will all see shortly no doubt. But what i will say is noticed a few digs and comments around about team selections wud any of you guys like the gaffers job and pick a stronger team i no i wouldnt so lets all stick together and encorage each other.

View From The Touchline

Just to throw my comments in....

I think we're being a little harsh on ourselves. Talbot were no mugs n lets face it, if we'd have struck early - like we were doing early in the season, I think we'd have gone on to win comfortably. I think on the bigger pitches we need to be more compact; from the side it looked as though there were no short passes on and we were being forced in to playing 20+ yard balls all the time.

If we'd put as much effort into moving into a position to receive the ball and keep it moving instead of pushing on we'd have more joy. Fiss and Ben suffered a little bit casue they were being forced down the centre or into long balls. Anyway cleansheet and 3 points was the order of the day and we got it.

Vant Huntlear of Anchorsholme - not too many saves to make but attacked the corners well and came of his line well - 8
Nico - Solid as per, adjusted to centre half easily and kept the talking going across the back - 7
Neil - Did as required gave the right winger nothing and showed composure - 7
Big Per - my MOM. Won everything and dominated the aerial battles - 8
Greenday - Soldiered on despite the man-flu and kept it tight unlucky to only hit the post from 20 yards - 7
Merce - Some good attacking play in the first half and played well at right back - 7
Thin Lizzy - Strong running down the right and looked dangerous cutting inside (sorry Per!!) - 7
Fiss - Industrious performance didn't have many outlets but gave nothing away in the middle - 7
Hopesy - Same as Fiss, solid across the middle struggled with outlets, mint goal though - 7
Sean - Despite sporting a buffont had a lively game, by his own admission could have bagged a couple but can't fault the work rate - 7
Wazzle - As with sean, could've bagged a couple but on the plus side showed aggression in the air in the box and battled for the ball - 7
Carey - Getting that ftness back - different game from 5 a side, showed some nice touches just needs more mins - 6
Snudge - Showed some good touches and put some good balls in the box - 6

My View of Sunday and the Aftermath.

Well boys it wasnt pretty but you got the 3 points thats what counts you are not going to destroy teams everyweek some you will have to dig in and pull your socks up and fight for the win cause that is what they are doing, they raise there game to play us. You seem to forget 2 years ago we wanted to beat the better sides in the division, we now are that better side, we are the ones they want to knock of so, remember to dig deep and be there for each other.
We must Stop all this silly bickering about ratings this is ment to be for banter and team messages.

Glad to see that you all read my message Esp Dez. about being patient and sticking together and supporting me for the bigger goal. I said training would be taken into account not that it would give you the right to play so keep your little digs to yourself cause to be honest im getting fucked of with it.

I do this for enjoyment not to have sly digs made about me if you want me to be honest i will, i picked what i thought was the best team end of if you dont like then go,

ALL OF YOU BE APART OF A TEAM OR GO AND STOP DISRUPTING THE TEAM.

Well rant over thought Per and hopesy was close for man of the match but will Give it to per for a constant solid display. I will say this we need to listen more, support more, better service to the forwards, instead of waiting for them to do some magic, and forwards you need to take your chances.

Last thing guys BE A TEAM it will win you the league!!!
