A Few Words from Scholesy
Richard Cookney, AKA Scholesy, has asked to say a few words and put down his thoughts on the team.
Scholesy joined FC Excelsior earlier this season and made an instant impact with his determination, passion and sweet left foot. Here are his thoughts on the team and how we have improved over the season.
All right fella's, Scholesy here just thought I'd write out a little something to express my feelings of how I think the club has changed since I arrived here.
When I first joined I wasn't to confident of the side that we had as we had players here who thought they were unbelievable but blatantly weren't. Also as I watched for my first game a very bad Fleetwood Ship side spanked us.
Since then though the attitude and team spirit at the club has dramatically improved. People seem to be playing a hell of a lot more for each other and it shows on the pitch that everyone sticks up for each other. I know that things like this make players more confident and stronger. I have decided to write my own player profiles out below of how I think players have improved since I came here.
Chris Mills (Millsy) – Nothing much has changed in my opinion of Millsy has he hasn't been here much but his confidence at commanding his penalty area is superb.
Ross Parker – I've known Ross for a little while, but never really seen him play to often but wherever he plays he seems to command his position very well whether it be in goal or at center half, he seems a no nonsense player which can be good when needed.
Daz Clark (Clarky) – My first opinion of Clarky has still stuck in my mind of him, he is what I am on a Saturday which is a consistent defender. Never does a lot wrong and hardly ever let the left winger get the better of him.
Neil Harrop – Neil has probably been one of the players who I've changed my opinion of the most. When I first joined I didn't think Neil had any confidence in his ability at all as he kept panicking when he had the ball. But in the past 4 weeks he has really upped his game and now gets the ball down and looks for his options instead of lumping it long. He has really impressed me with some Man of the Match performances.
Andy McKenzie (Macca) – Seems to be a very very strong Centre half, don't think I would like it if Andy were marking me this season. He very rarely loses a header and can read the game extremely well.
Steve McKenzie (Macca) – Same as when I played against him at junior football he is strong, quick and a great header off the ball. Really enjoyed playing alongside him against Layton Institute Jnrs in the cup, as we seem to click and complement each other.
Jon Evans – Having played against Jon at 7 a side before I knew he was a strong player who read the game extremely well so I wasn't too surprised to see him play that way on an 11 a side pitch. It has just become very unfortunate that Jon has suffered a broken leg at this very late and important stage of the season.
Steve Mercer (Merc) – No offence to Steve but from first impressions you wouldn't think he would cause many left backs a problem but having watched him progress through the last 10 games I have totally changed my opinion of that. I have watched him scored some very important goals and seem to send defenders dizzy with his trickery on the ball.
Chris Topham (Fizz) – Fizz was the person who convinced me to sign for the club and I am now very happy that I listened to him. Having never seen him play before I loved the banter we had together at parties but now that I've joined I've realised that his banter was reality. I was quite shocked that he was skipper but sine joining I feel that Fizz has shown superb captaincy quality. He gives 110% for the club and would probably bleed Yellow and Black if cut. He works hard, tackles hard and inspires confidence in all the players around him.
George Spittel – I've played against George before when he was at P&T and I was at Gardeners, we beat them and I did bag a hat trick but that's probably because George wasn't marking me. If he did I'm sure George would've done exactly what he's been doing since I joined the club. He throws his weight around and roughs up midfielders and the same as Fizz he inspires confidence within the players around him by throwing in hard tackles and powering through players to win headers. When I first joined I thought the central midfield role alongside Fizz would be fought out between me and George but I've now realised that I would prefer to play alongside George as I feel we both give each other confidence to play the game we want because we know each other has got the other one's back.
Daz Worrall (Wozza) – I'm a big fan of Daz, unfortunately he has lost his place at the moment but I do love the way he an come on because he seems to be able to pick a pass through the eye of a needle. I realised this when we played in the friendly against Mimmo's and he played a 30 yard pass through a gap in the defence, which tore them apart. I have full confidence that Daz will reclaim his spot in the team soon and won't give it up so easily.
Craig Worrall (Wozz) – Wozz is another player I've played against before but this was at junior football. He used to score a shed load of goals against everyone and he seems to be the same nowadays. I enjoy it if I'm in any danger that I can smash the ball long and you know 9 times out of 10 Wozz's pace will make the pass look good. He has a thunderous shot on him and if he keeps this form going I can see us definitely going from strength to strength.
Sean Lonsdale – I've seen Sean's name in the goalscoring charts for quite a while but my first impression of him when I first joined wasn't the best as at my first training session he was arguing with Steve that he was dropped on the Sunday before. Sine then though Sean has shown me what a fantastic talent he is, I've never played alongside a player who works so hard in training and in matches. He can scored a hell of a lot of goals when he puts his mind to it, my nickname for him now is the fox in the box.
Danny Heatley – I first saw Dan play when he came down Norcross training and ripped some of our first team players apart (which isn't too hard). But he just couldn't seem to put that into matches though, in the past 6 matches though he seems to of gone from strength to strength. He is running at players and when they start kicking him and will kick them back. He is a player who I feel could become the side's outlet on that wing and could soon become a match winner for us.
Steve Downing – Steve kinda bullied me into signing but I'm glad he did, sine signing I've had my ups and downs but am I thoroughly enjoying myself now and Steve is one of the factors behind that. I think he is starting to realise what makes this side tick and I think that he has the will and determination to make this side great.
Could I lastly say a reminder to the likes of Carey Baird, Jon Evans and Craig Hunt to get back very quickly from injuries as I''m looking forward to playing alongside you all in the future and I'm 100% sure I'll be here next season playing alongside everyone again.
Also boys lets keep this good run going and spank Waterloo this Sunday; they aren't a good side no one in this division is better then us in any way. If everyone just goes into this game and gives 110% we will get a result. Just go into the game with the confidence that you are a better player and the person you are marking as I do and win your individual battles and we won't have a problem. I know this is big headed and you probably won't need to but if anyone needs any advice or support give us a ring (07773 014273) and I'll hopefully help.
Cheers Lads,
Scholesy

I think you know what Im on about, that ginger mong has called me Fizz instead of Fiss!!!
Can you add a comment from me at the bottom Thanking him for his contribution and just second his rallying cry. With what the captain thinks of scholes, then he's got a write up that he can buzz about.
Scholesy - Got to know this lad outside of football which was good, like he says, we had some banter. I never gave him an inch defending our mighty excelsior!
Talking him in to coming down for us took months. I knew what a player he was and knew what a difference some saturday class would bring to the team. He hasn't proved me wrong, he's done exactly that (when Steve eventually grew the nads to play him).
I buzz of watching Scholes play, he can play football to a top standard and chooses to also play mind games with the opposition which has me laughing inside during games. We've had some chats over his period at the club and we always big each other up, it seems to help grow the confidence he talks about in the write up and we he talks of leaving it falls on me to talk him out of it.
I know he is very glad I did. As a player he can play in any position to a high standard, he can score goals, win tackles, pass the ball with accuracy short or long and
can he head the ball defensively or offensively what more can I say?
I don't know how he is in nets but if what he has done in all the positions he has played in so far then I'm sure he'd be our 1st choice keeper. A truly great player and a joy to play along side.
